Repost: MacRumors Article Explaining the Rebranding of USB 3.0

USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 are now considered previous generations of USB 3.2, at least in technical terms. A clear look at the changes as well as the marketing terms for each specification can be seen in this table (courtesy of Tom's Hardware).

Before, the USB 3.0 was rebranded to USB 3.1 Gen 1, and now with the introduction of the USB 3.2 standard, both USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 will fall under the umbrella of the USB 3.2 name.

It will be interesting to see how manufacturers respond to this terminology change and whether or not it will affect how products are listed and marketed in online stores. Currently, the common way of differentiation is to use relatively simple labels: USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, etc. These labels tend to be easier for consumers to understand. It is likely that the current practice will continue despite the rebranding changes announced by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).
